Christopher W. Chute

Chief of Police



Chief Christopher Chute is a 22-year veteran of the New Britain Police Department. He was hired as a Police Officer in December 1996.  He was born and raised in New Britain, Connecticut graduating from New Britain High School in 1993.  Chief Chute’s grandfather, father, two uncles and brother are retired New Britain Police Officers.


Chief Chute rose through the ranks of the New Britain Police Department starting his career as a patrol officer. He worked in numerous assignments from the neighborhood COPS program, Crime Suppression Unit, and the Narcotics Enforcement Bureau.  Chief Chute was promoted to Detective in 2002 and graduated as a polygraph examiner from the Texas Department of Public Safety Polygraph School in 2003.  In 2004, he began working as a Digital Forensic Examiner analyzing cell phones and computers for criminal investigations.  He has conducted examinations on digital devices for investigations ranging from high profile homicides to simple harassment cases.  He was promoted to Sergeant in 2008 and became the department’s Internal Affairs Investigator in 2012. 


Chief Chute was promoted to Lieutenant and oversaw the Criminal Investigations Division for short period of time until he was promoted to Captain; scoring a perfect 100 on his Captain Oral Board Exam.  As a newly promoted Captain, his assignment was Commander of the Professional Standards Division. He lead the New Britain Police Recruit Academy, Training Division, Traffic Safety Bureau, Internal Affairs, Animal Control, and Evidence Unit.   In 2017, Chief Chute was promoted to Deputy Chief of Police working under the command of Chief Wardwell. 


On March 27, 2019 Chief Christopher W. Chute was sworn in by New Britain Mayor Erin E. Stewart as the 15th Chief of Police of the City of New Britain. 


Chief Chute attended Central Connecticut State University, completing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Public Administration in 2003 and a Master of Science Degree in Computer Information Technology in 2008. In 2016, Chief Chute attended the Southern Police Institute Command Officer Development School and graduated first in his class, receiving the Director’s Award for having the highest academic average in his class.


Chief Chute is also an Associate Professor at Post University teaching several online and in person classes.  He is a Special Olympics Volunteer since 2009.  Chief Chute is Past President of the CT Polygraph Association and a former Adjunct Professor at Central Connecticut State University.  Chief Chutes is also a proud father of three children.
